Effective October 15, 2026
About this policy
The Competition is a body recomposition competition app, available at thecompetition.fit and as an iOS app. It is run by Sam and Jack Gillette. Not a company. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean Sam and Jack.
The Competition is for people 18 and older in the United States. This policy explains what information we collect, why, who sees it, and what you can do about it.
Body measurements and photos are sensitive. We treat them that way: we collect only what the competition needs, we don't sell anything, and we don't run ads or tracking.
Questions or requests: support@thecompetition.fit.
Your consent
When you create an account, you confirm that you are 18 or older and you consent to us collecting and processing your body measurements, progress photos, and the body fat estimates calculated from them, as described in this policy. This information can be considered consumer health data under some state laws, including Washington's My Health My Data Act. If you don't consent, don't create an account. You can withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account.
Information we collect
We collect what you give us to run a competition, plus a small amount of technical data.
| Category | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Account | Email address, password (stored only as a one-way hash), full name, nickname, profile photo |
| Scoring profile | Sex, date of birth, height, wrist circumference, and a frame size we calculate from height and wrist |
| Measurements | Weight, waist, neck, hip, and the date of each submission |
| Progress photos | The photos you submit with each measurement. We remove embedded metadata, including location, when you upload them |
| Calculated results | Body fat estimates, fat mass, lean mass, points, and rankings, including estimates generated by AI from your photos and written explanations of those estimates |
| Chat | Messages, photos, videos, audio, and files you post in a competition's chat |
| Invitations | The email address of anyone you or a competition admin invites |
| Admin records | Notes, corrections, bonuses, and penalties a competition admin records about your submissions, including a body fat value an admin enters from another source |
| Technical data | Your browser or device type when you reset your password; your IP address as recorded by our hosting and storage providers when you use the app |
We do not collect your precise location, contacts, or payment information. We do not use analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting tools.
How we use your information
We use your information to run the competitions you join, and for nothing unrelated to that.
- Scoring. Your scoring profile, measurements, and photos feed our scoring system, The Equation, which estimates body fat and calculates fat lost, muscle gained, and points.
- Running competitions. Showing standings, reveals, chat, and results to the people in your competition.
- Checking submissions. Estimating body fat from photos, and assessing whether submissions look reliable, so scoring is fair.
- Improving scoring. Studying past submissions and assessments to make The Equation more accurate over time.
- Email. Sending invitations, password resets, results announcements, and submission reminders for competitions you're in. We don't send marketing email.
- Security. Protecting accounts and investigating misuse.
Body fat estimates, including AI estimates, are for the competition only. They are not medical advice and are not a diagnosis.
Who can see your information in the app
The Competition is built for friend groups, so the people in your competition see a lot of what you share. Here is exactly who sees what.
| Who | What they can see |
|---|---|
| Other competitors in your competition | Your name or nickname, profile photo, scores, rankings, and chat messages. Your progress photos and measurements too, unless you turn off photo or number sharing |
| The competition's admin (the person who runs it) | Your email address, and your submissions to that competition including measurements and the AI's estimates and written descriptions of your photos, regardless of your sharing settings, so they can review them. The exception: your progress photos stay hidden if you've turned off photo sharing |
| The site admins (Sam and Jack) | All data in the app, for operating and supporting it |
| People you invite | Your display name, as the person who invited them |
Your email address is never shown to other competitors, only to the admin of each competition you join. Turning off photo sharing hides your progress photos from everyone in the app, including the competition admin, though the admin still sees the AI's estimate and description of them. Turning off number sharing hides your measurements, and details that could reveal them, from other competitors, but not from the admin. The site admins still have technical access to stored data to operate and support the app.
Service providers
We use a small number of outside services to run the app. Each receives only what it needs for its job.
| Provider | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Heroku (Salesforce) | Hosts the app and database | All data stored in the app; IP address and device type for each request |
| Backblaze B2 | Stores photos, videos, and files | Every file you upload; your IP address when your device loads or uploads files |
| Mailgun | Sends email | Your email address and the email's contents |
| OpenRouter, routing to Google Gemini | AI body fat estimates from photos | Your current progress photos, your previous submission's photos and estimate, and your sex. No name, email, or account ID |
| OpenRouter, routing to TypeSafe | Assesses whether submissions look reliable | Your measurement history and body fat estimates. No photos, name, email, or account ID |
| Apple | Distributes the iOS app | What Apple collects under its own terms when you download and use apps |
AI providers process photos and measurements under their own terms, which govern how long they keep data. Progress photos can show your face and body, so they identify you even though no name is sent with them.
We don't currently send push notifications. The iOS app may ask for notification permission; the app doesn't use it yet.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your information, and we don't share it for advertising.
- We don't show ads.
- We don't use analytics, tracking pixels, or third-party cookies.
- We don't share your information with anyone outside the providers listed above, except when the law requires it.
How long we keep your information
We keep your information until you delete your account. There is no automatic expiry.
During the testing phase, we may reset or delete test competitions and their data. We'll tell you before we do.
Deleting a submission isn't possible on its own. If you resubmit on the same day, your new submission replaces the earlier one, and the earlier one's photos are deleted.
Deleting your account takes effect immediately and requires your password. When you delete your account:
- Your progress photos, profile photo, and chat videos are deleted from storage.
- Your name, nickname, and other account details are removed. Your account shows as "Deleted competitor".
- Your pending invitations and password reset requests are deleted.
- You are removed from any competitions that haven't started, and eliminated from competitions in progress.
- The written explanations of your AI estimates are deleted.
Some records stay after deletion, so that competition results remain accurate for everyone else:
- Measurements and scores stay attached to the deleted account, without your name. In a small friend group, people who know you may still recognize your results.
- Chat messages stay in the competition's chat, shown as from a deleted competitor. Individual chat messages can't be deleted.
- Finished seasons are kept as a permanent record. If you took part in a finished season, your results and the name recorded for that season stay in its archive.
You can't delete your account while you're running a competition that hasn't finished. Contact us and we'll help transfer it.
Your choices
- Sharing. In each competition, you can turn off sharing of your progress photos or your numbers with other competitors.
- Your profile. You can edit your name, nickname, and profile photo in your account settings.
- Submissions. You can replace a submission by resubmitting on the same day. Past submissions can't be deleted individually; deleting your account removes their photos.
- Your account. You can delete your account at any time from your profile.
- Requests. Email support@thecompetition.fit to ask for a copy of your information, to correct it, or with any other privacy question. We'll respond within 30 days.
Security
Passwords are stored only as one-way hashes. Photos and files are served through links that expire after a few hours. All traffic uses encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee your information will never be exposed, but we'll tell you promptly if a breach affects you.
Age limit
The Competition is only for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If we learn someone under 18 has an account, we'll delete it.
United States only
The Competition is intended for people in the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the United States.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date above. If a change significantly affects how your information is used, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
